Caring for Friends at St. Andrews

No one should be hungry or alone in a world with so many caring people.
— Rita Ungaro-Schiavon, Founder of Caring for Friends

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we provided just under 100,000 meals and soups to the homebound, homeless & hungry in the Greater Philadelphia area!

History of St. Andrew’s Involvement In Caring for Friends

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church’s community has always had a hunger for the gospel and helping others, so it was an easy decision to begin a partnership with Caring for Friends over 37 years ago. One Saturday per month, people would gather in the parish house to make and assemble meals. The meals would then be transported on Mondays and delivered to the elderly and needy in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. Our community of volunteers has grown throughout the years, expanding to friends of all faiths and neighboring towns. Though we have been faced with the difficulties and changes of these demanding times, we have persisted. From increasing the meals we make to the drop-offs we do, we have risen to meet the higher demand of the sudden need to provide nutrition to 5,000 people. Now providing more meals and soups in a week than we once did in a month, St. Andrew’s has continued to show that nothing is stronger than community. In 2021, St. Andrew’s was awarded Caring for Friends’ Caring Cooking Church of the Year Award! Thank you all for your hard work in the last year and always!
