Strengthening the Church

The Foundations of Stewardship

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Gen. 1:1)

A steward is a person entrusted with management of another's property. The earth is not ours; it is God's creation. According to the Genesis account, God made us in His image, blessed us, and told us to replenish the earth and subdue it and to take our food from it. But that does not make it ours. It remains His. Our relationship to God's world is a relationship of stewardship.

Jesus said: Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season ? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. (Luke 12:42)

When Christ comes, we are to be held accountable for our stewardship of the property that has been entrusted to us.

"Lord, thou deliveredst to me five talents; behold, I have gained beside them five talents more". His lord said unto him: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant . . ." (Matthew 25: 21-22).

Those who use their God-given talents well, and bring the returns back to God, are rewarded with God's joy. Those who bury them ? Check Matthew 25:30. The consequences are not so sweet. That's just the way it works.
